Packing for an African safari is quite different to most other trips you’ll take. Navigating rural roads or open plains in an open-top 4×4 vehicle means that you’ll get exposed to unpaved roads, experience varying temperatures, and a possible cloudburst of rain. Temperatures can change dramatically throughout the day making layers essential. Pre-dawn and sunset game drives are often chilly but quickly heat up as the sun rises. If your itinerary includes flights in a bush plane between different parks or camps, you will need to pack extra light to comply with charter flight baggage restrictions (no more than 33 pounds/15 kg). Don’t forget! You will want to leave room for the souvenirs you might spot on the way. It is also a good idea to have a small backpack to carry your essentials (water, sun screen, bug repellent, camera, etc…) on the bush rides.
When choosing your luggage, a soft-sided duffel bag is always better than a rigid hard-shell case. Duffels are easier to fit into narrow overhead compartments or into the back of our safari vehicle – and they’re more likely to withstand the wear and tear of life in the bush. Also always pack your valuables, especially your camera, in your hand luggage.

Pro Tip:
If there are two parts to your trip, consult with Kotia Safaris as you may be able to pack a separate duffel or backpack for the safari section and leave a second duffel or suitcase with the hotel back at base. This keeps things light for your bush flight to Safari while still allowing you to pack your scuba gear for your second week on the beach in Zanzibar.

1) How to Dress on Safari

Safaris are casual affairs. The best clothes are loose-fitting, lightweight, hide dirt, and dry quickly. Multiple layers and a good fleece or jacket will help you stay warm in the early mornings with the flexibility to shed as it gets warmer to then add as it cools down again. You will want to wear long sleeves and pants in the evening to protect yourself from biting insects.
When it comes to colors, pick tans, olive, brown & khaki as they are the best colors to wear. Khaki is a safari favorite as it is cool, camouflaged and hides dirt well. Do not wear white or bright colors while on safari as it disturbs the animals…and no camo! Only the military are allowed to wear camo. Additionally, if you are in tsetse fly country, avoid wearing blue as it is an attractant for these insects.

2) Suggested Clothes and Accessories for a 5 – 10-day Safari

4 t-shirts
· 2 long-sleeve shirts
· 1 sweatshirt or fleece
· 1 lightweight raincoat
· 1 pair of comfortable shorts
· 2 pairs of cotton trousers/pants
· 3 pairs of socks
· 4 pairs of underwear
· Pajamas
· 1 pair of sunglasses (preferably with UV protection)
· 1 sunhat
· 1 warm woolen hat
· 1 swimsuit
· 1 pair of lightweight, durable walking shoes or hiking boots
· 1 pair of flip-flops or sandals (for wearing around camp)
· Money belt
· A supply of lingerie bags to keep your dirty laundry separate from your clean clothes
· Personal water bottle that can refilled at camp

3) Toiletries and First Aid

Every camp or lodge will have at least a basic first aid kit, and our safari vehicles will too. However, it’s always a good idea to bring your own small supply of hygiene and health essentials that can also fit into your day bag while in the bush.
· Personal toiletries, including travel size shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, moisturizer, toothpaste and toothbrush, sanitary products for women
· Sunscreen (minimum SPF 30+)
· Mosquito repellant (the most effective includes DEET)
· Hand Sanitizer
· Packet of tissues
· Contraceptives (including a supply of the pill, if you’re on it)
· Antihistamines for bug bites and allergic reactions
· Painkillers, e.g. aspirin or Tylenol
· Cold and flu medicines
· Diarrhea medication/ constipation medicine
· Antiseptic cream
· Band-aids
· Prescription medicines (remember to pack 1 weeks’ worth in your carry one)
· Epi-Pens if needed due to severe allergy
· Malaria pills (if needed)
· A spare pair of glasses for those that wear contact lenses (it’s often too dusty to wear them comfortably)

4) Electronic Devices

Camera – you know the kind of photographer you are, so whether an amateur or budding professional, just make sure to bring gear you can carry, cloud storage, spare memory card(s), spare camera battery(s), and waterproofing if need be. And if you’re happy with your Phone, no shame in that either.
· Binoculars
· Spare AA and AAA batteries, if needed
· Electrical adaptor for Tanzania
· Small flashlight (to use inside your tent or to find your way around camp at night)

5) Cell phone service

Since you will be on a safari-type expedition, it’s unlikely that you will be close enough to any cell towers to be able to use your cell phone.

6) Do I need power adapters?

The power grid in Tanzania is 220-240v, meaning that you will need a converter for any 110v devices that can’t handle the higher voltage. Depending on where you are, you will also encounter both Type G (BS-1363) plugs and Type D (BS-546) outlets, which require converters.

7) Pack For a Purpose

At Kotia safaris we support local community initiatives in and around the wildlife parks, reserves and communities. If you want to make a positive difference during your time in Tanzania, ask us if you can bring any supplies that will help these projects (usually school supplies, medication, women’s hygiene, or clothing). Contact us for a list of specific requests from community initiatives in Tanzania as well as suggestions on how best to pack the items they need.
